Dr. Dre and Snoop Doggy Dogg
Doggystyle is the debut solo album by Long Beach, California rapper Calvin "Snoop Doggy Dogg" Broadus Jr. Broadus' appearances on N.W.A. co-founder Andre "Dr. Dre" Young's debut solo single, "Deep Cover", and debut solo album, The Chronic, made his upcoming solo project the most highly-anticipated debut rap album in history.
Some radio stations, eager to satisfy the demand of fans, played a leaked album version of the song "Gin and Juice" before a radio-friendly, edited version became available. The album, Doggystyle, was released on November 23, 1993 atop the Billboard 200 chart. Doggystyle sold 806,585 copies in its first week, setting a new record for a debut artist of any genre of music. It also boasted the second-highest first-week sales for any artist (including veterans) up to that point. Doggystyle helped Broadus' label, Death Row Records, to become the most powerful rap label of its time and has since gone on to sell over 11 million copies worldwide.
Broadus debuted one of his signature catchphrases on Doggystyle: "We don't love them hoes..." The album is also noteworthy for containing the first hip-hop remake -- Broadus' cover of Douglas "Doug E. Fresh" Davis and Richard "Slick Rick" Walters' 1985 classic "La Di Da Di" (re-titled "Lodi Dodi"). Another track, "Doggy Dogg World", references one of the consequences of Broadus' meteoric rise to superstardom -- the emergence of imitators. Long Beach rapper-turned-singer Shawn "Domino" Ivy drew widespread comparisons to Broadus when his single "Ghetto Jam" was released on November 16 -- one week prior to the release of Doggystyle. Chicago rapper Shawntae "Da Brat" Harris was viewed as "the female Snoop Doggy Dogg" in the wake of the May 1994 release of her debut single "Funkdafied". The song even features a back-and-forth interplay between Harris and her producer Jermaine Dupri Mauldin that mirrors that of Broadus' and Young's on their platinum single "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang". Harris' braided hair and style of dress were also highly reminiscent of Broadus'.
A minor controversy erupted in the wake of the album's release when Broadus' cousin and label-mate Delmar "Dat Nigga Daz" Arnaud revealed that both he and producer Warren "Warren G" Griffin made substantial contributions to Doggystyle's production, in spite of Young being given full credit for composing the songs.
