2001 was a big year in Hip Hop. It'll forever be known as the year that Fabolous, T.I. and D12 made their national debuts and Foxy Brown released her final studio album (so far). It was also the year that DMX released his fourth consecutive album -- The Great Depression -- to debut at the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart. Mack 10 joined the growing ranks of already-successful rappers to join Cash Money, but most importantly...Jay-Z aggressively and publicly challenged Nas for the crown. Jigga's The Takeover called out both Esco and Mobb Deep's Prodigy and set off a firestorm that included Nas' resurgence; rumors of growing tension between Hip Hop-loving residents of Queensbridge and Marcy; legions of rap fans taking sides; a warning from Allen Iverson to keep him out of it; and a slew of damn good songs that culminated in Jay's own mom telling him live on the radio to accept his loss with dignity. Word to the mother.
